![]() ![]() Given the time I've spent trying to fix this it is ultimately faster to just flatten and re-install. I had intended on further testing/troubleshooting how to get this to work without blowing away my install but my TimeMachine backup (took 12+ hours to restore) somehow prompted me for the wrong Apple ID (I had changed mine about a year ago) and wouldn't let me progress with the restore past that. I tried disabling time machine, running disk recovery, re-installing Sierra through recovery mode (failed / file unavailable), re-installing High Sierra via recovery mode (installer failed), installing Sierra via a USB drive (hold down option, select USB drive with image on it), and probably something else I'm forgetting to mention. Erase the entire disk if you can't erase the Mac startup disk in recovery mode after hitting 'View > Show All Devices' rather than eliminating the data volume. Opt for 'Disk Utility' to format the boot disk. Open Diskutil and reformat the drive to APFS ****Note that you will lose any data stored on the drive**** Enter Mac Recovery Mode on the latest Macs having a recovery partition. Open Terminal and force unmount the driveģ. Boot into internet recovery mode Option-Command-RĢ. To check for the exact name of the disk: sudo diskutil list. ![]() If you want to wipe the entire hard drive, you will need to use an external, bootable volume to boot from. Then using terminal, used the following commands to force unmount disk and erase the disk after. You need to make sure you are trying to erase the partition (probably called 'Macintosh HD'), and not the entire disk. ![]() Sep 27 15:32:48 Hostname OSInstaller: Clearing automation and attempting to rebless. I've tried disk utility repairs both in Sierra, while in the High Sierra installer, and by booting into recovery mode. I have the exact same issue with a late 2016 27-inch iMac with 1TB SSD. ![]()
